Dr. Alireza Ghaffarieh is a seasoned medical professional, inventor, and an author. He has patented over 5 inventions, and published over 40 publications and co-authored 2 books. He received his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from University of Shiraz, one of the most prestigious universities in Iran. After that, he moved on to complete his residency training in ophthalmology there. During the next chapter of his professional life, Dr. Ghafarieh completed training in keratoprosthesis surgery and low vision rehabilitation at Fyodorov Eye Institute in Moscow, Russia. Following his successful training, he returned to Iran to become an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Fasa Medical School. Moreover, he was nominated to function as an external graduate faculty member in Biomechanical Engineering Department, Robotic eye surgery at the University of Shiraz. After a few years of teaching, Dr. Ghaffarieh moved to the United States to open a new chapter in his life - an ocular pathology research fellow at University of Wisconsin Ophthalmology department. His interest in targeting RPE Glucose-6-Phosphatase to protect retina in diabetic retinopathy, leading to his next publication, proved to be a new benchmark that brings about a paradigm shift in the current understanding of this devastating condition. Dr. Ghaffarieh is continuously thriving be an active member of the academia, and he is currently a pathology resident at the University of Indiana Pathology department.
